Who It's For

Middle school is a critical time for students to build the strong writing skills that will support them throughout their academic journey and beyond.

Our middle school writing program is for students in 6th-8th grade at any writing level.

Some students come to us needing to learn the fundamentals of basic writing while others are advanced writers looking for enrichment.

All of LexEd's programs are made to work together. Many of our students are with us for all three years of middle school before graduating to our high school programs.

We offer 1-1 instruction as well as small group instruction for students who prefer to work with a friend or classmate.

  • Develop topic sentences and thesis statements that serve as helpful roadmaps for their writing.

  • Build a strong foundation in sentence construction and paragraph development.

  • Cultivate habits that lead to clear, compelling communication across disciplines.

  • Lay the groundwork for advanced writing through structured practice and support.

Grammar & Vocabulary

Foundational Writing Skills

The foundation of good writing is knowledge of standard English conventions and a rich vocabulary. These are essential skills for middle school students to master. Our program helps students:

  • Learn the rules of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure to build a solid foundation in language.

  • Expand their vocabulary to strengthen both spoken and written communication.

  • Develop precision and clarity through engaging activities and targeted writing exercises.

  • Gain confidence in their use of language with direct, individualized feedback.

  • Strengthen the foundational skills that support success in all areas of academic writing.

  • Express themselves more effectively and accurately across a range of contexts.

Support for School Assignments

Our school-assigned writing support offers students targeted guidance on their current writing projects across a range of subjects.  Our program helps students:

  • Strengthen their ideas, organization, and clarity through individualized instruction, whether they’re working on analytical essays, research papers, creative pieces, or personal reflections.

  • Break down assignments into manageable steps, making writing tasks feel more approachable and less overwhelming.

  • Manage deadlines effectively by developing planning and time-management strategies tailored to their writing process.

  • Revise with purpose, learning how to identify areas for improvement and refine their work for clarity and impact.

Enrichment & Creative Writing

Middle school students have so much to say about the world, their experiences, and their ideas. Writing is a powerful outlet for their growing curiosity and creativity.  Our program helps students:

  • Experiment with voice, style, and genre through engaging prompts, imaginative exercises, and peer workshops.

  • Explore a range of forms—from poetry and short stories to personal narratives and flash fiction.

  • Nurture their creativity in a supportive, inspiring environment that encourages risk-taking and self-expression.

  • Play with language and develop a deeper appreciation for the art and craft of writing.

  • Find and refine their unique writing voices through consistent practice and reflection.

Close Reading & Nonfiction Analysis

Close Reading & Nonfiction Analysis

Reading and responding to nonfiction helps students engage critically with a wide range of nonfiction texts from articles and essays to memoirs and speeches. Our program helps students:

  • Identify main ideas, analyze arguments, and evaluate evidence in a variety of texts.

  • Summarize information effectively, capturing key points with clarity and precision.

  • Form strong, well-supported opinions grounded in critical thinking and textual analysis.

  • Use textual evidence to support their ideas in both analytical and reflective writing.

  • Apply these skills across academic subjects and in real-world contexts with growing confidence.

Close Reading & Literary Analysis

Close Reading & Nonfiction Analysis

Through a combination of close reading and analytical writing, students deepen their understanding of both literature and the writing process. Our program helps students:

  • Engage deeply with short stories, novels, plays, and poetry to develop thoughtful, well-structured literary responses.

  • Explore themes, literary devices, and authorial choices with increasing insight and precision.

  • Support their ideas with strong textual evidence and well-developed commentary.

  • Strengthen their ability to write coherent, organized essays that reflect critical thinking.

  • Become more insightful readers who can interpret literature with nuance and clarity.

I’ve been working with Natasha as my writing tutor for six years! She has taught me many things like grammar and vocabulary with Greek and Latin roots. I’ve also learned how to write great stories, use quotes as evidence, and organize my thoughts. Natasha is so patient, kind and funny!
